Pale Soul is for fans of old school R&B music. Dave Rudolf has always loved the way classic R&B music feels. He may look like he makes Jimmy Buffet-style music, but appearances can be deceiving. This white dude’s got soul– Pale Soul.
Dave Rudolf counts Little Richard, Louis Prima and Fats Domino as influences from the early years of R&B. His music is also informed by doo-wop, funk and soul, and even neo-soul music makers. As an accomplished singer-songwriter himself, with nearly three dozen albums to his credit, Rudolf has put together an album of a dozen tasty songs that capture that sometimes elusive but always appreciated throwback R&B spirit. Featuring rollicking piano, harmonica, and plenty of other instruments, Rudolf’s songs demonstrate that music is his life and he lives it well.
Pale Soul is mostly upbeat, with lots of horns and cool backup vocals– music you can boogie to. With a voice sounding like a gruff Randy Newman and/or the heir to the Joe Cocker vocal throne, Rudolf tears through meaty, bluesy, groovy songs on Pale Soul like “I Got A Thing” and “Glide.” Hear his stuff on CDBaby here. There’s no filler on this album– it’s all good! –Mark Weber Music Blog
