If you like Saint Motel, Atlas Genius, or Maroon5, then I’d like you to give the band Island Apollo a listen. They’re from Southern California, have had their music in national ads for the likes of Sprint and Sobe, and, best of all, you’ve got to hear their new single! It’s called “Hold It Down,” and it’s the kind of pop music I miss: synths, drums, guitars and solid vocals… none of this “EDM” dance/cartoon crap that has infiltrated the charts. This is music like music used to be in the 1980s and a bit of the 1990s, brought up to 2017 standards without kowtowing to the EDM gods of Top 40 playlists. For some odd reason, bands like Island Apollo tend to get relegated to the AAA format of radio (adult alternative) which means they’re stuck in a niche market– mostly hipsters hear ’em. That said, a song like “Hold It Down,” if there’s any justice in this world, should be an across the board Top 40 smash hit. It’s the kind of song that soccer moms, hipsters, music aficionados, and youngsters could/should like. Will they? We shall see!
Just so you know, Island Apollo has established themselves as one of LA’s hottest bands to watch. Combining a classic surf vibe with funky urban grooves, Island Apollo captures the spirit of a West Coast daydream come to life. With members from Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego, Island Apollo is authentically Southern Californian and isn’t afraid to show it.
After being named Orange County’s “Best Pop Artist” from the OC Music Awards, Island Apollo has had songs appear on FOX Sports, CBS, PBS, TeenNick, VH1, USA Network, and has even had a song appear in a commercial with 2017 Sports Illustrated cover model Kate Upton. With the release of their new single “Hold it Down,” I hope they garner more attention and more fans. I know I’m one of them. –Mark Weber
